The membership card in the visor is not a complete answer when a San Diego EV dies on I-15 or in a Chula Vista lot. AAA roadside assistance membership levels change by club, by year, and by the exact product on the account. Before anyone accepts a tow or a jump, match the live plan to the actual problem.

Identify the membership plan first

Start with the account, not the truck. AAA is a federation of clubs. The club tied to a San Diego County ZIP sets the live product names, dues, and roadside rules. Charge Pro SD could not confirm one statewide table in its verified claims ledger. The member record is the source that matters on the shoulder.

Pull the card, the AAA app, and the last receipt. Write down the primary member, any associates, the membership number, and the exact plan label. National ads often show three roadside levels and reuse names such as Classic, Plus, and Premier. Charge Pro SD could not verify that those labels, or any mileage tied to them, are the current products here. The account label still controls what dispatch will honor.

Ask whether coverage follows the person or the car. Some public AAA pages describe help that travels with the member in an eligible vehicle, including a friend’s car or a rental. That is a club rule, not a fact this site can freeze. Read the handbook for the club that serves the ZIP. A household driver who is not listed may not be covered, even in the family EV.

Tesla owners should open the Tesla app in the same moment. Tesla directs owners to request roadside assistance through that app. Tesla also says out-of-range help may be available but is not financially covered, and that availability can be restricted case by case. Manufacturer roadside and AAA are separate products.

If the plan is new, ask when roadside benefits start. Waiting periods, same-day fees, gift rules, associate pricing, and senior discounts were not verified in Charge Pro SD’s ledger. Some clubs advertise senior rates. Charge Pro SD could not confirm a San Diego age cutoff or whether a discount changes towing miles. Ask the club and get the live product in writing.

Entry-level plans get sold as the local bargain. Whether that is worth the dues depends on live mileage, live call limits, and how the household drives. A Mira Mesa hop is not an I-8 climb toward Alpine. Confirm the current product before anyone treats last year’s brochure as the plan.

Confirm the current roadside benefits

Once the plan name is on paper, confirm what that plan does this year. Towing mileage, lockout help, battery service, and the number of included calls are the usual differences between tiers. Charge Pro SD could not verify the current mile caps, call counts, locksmith caps, or dues for the club that serves San Diego County. Those figures move. Public comparison pages also mix clubs. Do not pay or refuse a tow based on a number from another state.

Ask the club or the app for the live member handbook. Then write down four answers. How many roadside calls remain this membership year. How many towing miles are included on this incident. What happens if the destination is farther than that mileage. Whether a 12-volt jump, a lockout, a spare-tire change, or a fuel delivery is included, and whether any of those counts as a full service call.

Fuel delivery is a gasoline-era benefit. An empty EV traction pack is not an empty gas tank. Confirm whether the club will treat a depleted high-voltage battery as a tow, a winch, or a job it will not do on site. Charge Pro SD could not confirm that AAA membership includes on-site charging of an EV pack. If the dispatcher cannot say yes in plain words, plan for a tow to a charger or a separate out-of-charge recovery request.

Towing destination matters in this county. Mileage from a stall on SR-78 in Vista may not reach the charger you need. A stall on I-5 in Encinitas faces a different charger map than a stall on SR-67 outside Ramona. Ask where the truck is allowed to go on this plan, and whether an approved shop is required.

California Highway Patrol’s Freeway Service Patrol, on designated routes and hours, may move a disabled vehicle only to an approved drop, not to a chosen house or private shop. That program is not AAA. CHP materials Charge Pro SD reviewed do not describe mobile EV charging.

How many included tows come with the plan is the question people type into search. The honest answer is whatever the live handbook lists for remaining calls and included miles, minus anything already used this year. Confirm whether unused calls roll over. Charge Pro SD could not verify a rollover rule. If the only confirmed benefit is a short tow, hear the over-mileage rule from AAA or the towing facility before the truck moves. Charge Pro SD does not publish those rates.

Separate an empty battery from low-voltage failure

The plan only helps if the diagnosis is right. An EV that will not move can be out of traction charge, or it can have a dead 12-volt (or other low-voltage) battery. Those are different jobs.

A depleted traction pack is an energy problem. The car may show zero miles, refuse Ready, or already have shut down on a grade. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that charging time depends on state of charge, battery capacity and type, the vehicle’s onboard charging capacity, equipment output, and electrical service. J1772 and J3400 (NACS) appear on AC Level 2. A CCS inlet uses the J1772 portion for AC and adds DC pins. Connector shape still does not prove the station matches the voltage and power the car needs. That stall usually needs a tow to a working charger, or a mobile charge from an independent operator who confirms the port and equipment. It is not a gas-can call.

A low-voltage failure is an electronics problem. Lights, screens, door handles, and the high-voltage contactors can all go dark while the big pack still holds energy. Tesla’s current Model Y manual describes a lithium-ion low-voltage battery, identifies positive and negative jump posts after the hood is open, and warns that Model Y cannot be used to jump-start another vehicle. The wires behind the tow-eye cover only release the hood latches. Tesla says they cannot charge the low-voltage battery and must be disconnected as soon as the hood unlatches. Follow the owner’s manual for that vehicle and year. Do not copy a Model Y map onto a different brand.

Ask AAA whether this membership includes a 12-volt jump on this EV, and whether the responding facility will attempt it. Our note on whether AAA covers a dead Tesla 12V battery is the same caution. Get the answer on this call, for this car, from this club. If the dispatcher only offers a tow, that is still useful. If they offer a jump, ask what happens if the car will not stay awake.

Do not stand in a traffic lane to sort this out. CHP says to call 911 when a disabled vehicle is in a dangerous location or a traffic lane. In metropolitan areas, other roadside requests can go through 511 by saying “Roadside Assistance.”

Ask what help the dispatch request covers

When the club answers, treat the call as a contract conversation. Say the city, the freeway or street, the make, model, model year, and the symptom in one breath. Then ask what this specific dispatch covers.

Will they send a light-service vehicle or a tow unit. Will they attempt a 12-volt jump on this EV. Will they change a tire if a usable spare is present. Will they unlock the car, and is there a cap. Will they winch from a publicly maintained road only. Will they tow, how far, and to which destination. Does this request count against the annual call limit.

Listen for what they will not do. On-site charging of a high-voltage pack is the usual gap. Charge Pro SD’s claims ledger does not include an AAA mobile-charging benefit. A GEICO Emergency Roadside Service page Charge Pro SD reviewed lists towing to a qualified shop (mileage limits apply), jumps, tire changes with a working spare, lockout help, winching near a public road, and fuel delivery. It does not list on-site EV pack charging. Ask AAA the same direct question. If the answer is a tow, decide whether a charger, a dealer, or home is the right drop, and whether the plan’s miles reach it.

Tesla owners can run a parallel request in the Tesla app. Rivian says roadside assistance is included for the duration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and is reached through the Rivian app and center display. Rivian’s legal terms, last updated July 16, 2026, describe complimentary emergency towing to the nearest authorized Rivian location or an agreed spot for warranty-related issues, with non-warranty towing possibly charged. Lucid describes roadside as an additional program, not part of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Those programs still do not replace a live AAA answer.

If AAA will only tow, and the car needs energy, compare that path with AAA versus mobile EV charging in San Diego. A tow across East County can spend the whole mileage allowance and still leave the car short of a working stall. An independent mobile charge, when an operator accepts the job, can be the better match. Charge Pro SD does not set that price or promise that an operator will take the call. The operator confirms equipment, location, and cost before work starts.

Consider local operator matching

If the membership will not do the job in front of you, switch to a local match. Charge Pro SD is a referral service for San Diego County. It connects drivers with licensed, independent EV rescue operators. It does not own trucks, employ crews, hold a trade license, or perform the work. The customer contracts and pays the operator directly.

Tell the matcher the same facts AAA just heard: city, exact location, make, model, year, port type, adapter if any, whether the car is at zero traction charge or looks like a 12-volt failure, and whether the car can roll. Ask the independent operator to confirm the vehicle, the proposed service, the price, and the timing before anyone is sent. That is emergency EV roadside assistance when the stall is mixed or unclear, and out-of-charge recovery when the pack is empty.

Tesla-specific stalls have a separate comparison in AAA versus Charge Pro Tesla rescue in San Diego. Use it as a checklist, not as a promise that a given operator has a particular truck.

The California Energy Commission tracks zero-emission vehicles and charging policy at the state level. That policy does not dispatch a truck. The live membership, the manufacturer app, CHP, and a local operator are the four contacts that actually move a stranded EV in this county.

When to call us

Call when the AAA plan on the account will not cover an empty pack, a low-voltage stall, or a destination the tow miles cannot reach. A matcher still has to confirm the vehicle and the operator’s equipment before anyone is assigned. Call us at (858) 400-4465 and we’ll connect you with a local EV rescue operator.
