Dark screen. Dead frunk. Your Tesla's 12V is the culprit.
Every Tesla has a small 12V accessory battery in addition to the big traction pack. It runs the computer, the screen, the door handles, and the charge port unlock. When it dies — and 12V batteries do die, especially in Model S and Model X cars 4+ years old — the whole car goes dark. You can't unlock it with the app. You can't open the frunk to jump it the old-fashioned way. We carry the tools to wake a dead Tesla and get you moving.
What's included
- Open a Tesla with dead 12V using manual frunk release or tow-eye power access
- Connect an external 12V jump pack to wake the onboard computer
- Verify 12V voltage and load-test the battery for replacement diagnosis
- Replace a failed 12V battery on-site (AGM lead-acid or lithium, per your model year)
- Reset any cabin or infotainment faults that cropped up during the 12V failure
- Check the low-voltage DC-DC converter for the underlying cause of repeated drains
- Couple 12V service with a traction-battery charge if both are low
- Recommend a lithium 12V upgrade on older Model S and Model X
When you need this service
- Tesla screen is black and tapping the brake does nothing
- Door handles don't present; app says "Car is unreachable"
- You got a "12V battery needs service" warning last week and ignored it
- Car sat for 2+ weeks unused and now won't wake
- You've had multiple unexplained wake-ups and drains in the last month
- Tesla service told you the 12V needs replacement but you can't get to them
Common questions
How do you open a Tesla when the 12V is dead?
Model 3 and Model Y: there's a tow-eye access in the front bumper. Pop the tow-eye cover, connect a 12V pack to the two terminals behind it, and the frunk opens. From there we clip to the main 12V post. Model S (refresh) and Model X have a different access — we carry the right tools for each year.
How often should a Tesla 12V be replaced?
AGM 12V batteries (pre-2021 most models) typically last 3 to 4 years in San Diego's climate. Lithium 12V batteries (2021+ Model 3/Y refresh, newer S/X) typically last 8 to 10 years. If yours is due, replacing it preemptively is much cheaper than getting stranded.
Can I just use a regular car jumper on my Tesla?
Not safely, in most cases. Tesla 12V access points are small and the wrong approach can short a nearby component. The tow-eye access on Model 3/Y is specifically designed for this. Use a proper jump pack (not a boost from another running car), and follow the 10-minute wait sequence after connecting before attempting to wake the screen.
Why do Tesla 12V batteries die so often?
The 12V in a Tesla works harder than in a gas car — it runs the always-on computer, sentry mode, and wakes for app calls. If sentry or cabin-overheat protection runs hard in hot weather, the 12V cycles more and fails sooner. Newer Teslas switched to lithium 12V partly to address this.
Do you service 12V on other EVs?
Yes. Most EVs have a similar 12V accessory battery. Rivian, Ford Lightning, Ioniq, EV6, and Polestar all have a 12V that can fail and strand the vehicle. The access locations differ by brand — we carry the reference docs for the common ones.
