Common questions. Straight answers.
What EV drivers want to know before they call. If your question isn't here, dispatch can answer on the phone — the number is in the header.
Dispatch & response
How fast do you arrive?
Typical arrival in urban San Diego (coastal, inland corridor, South Bay) is 25 to 60 minutes. East county and mountain dispatches take 75 to 90 minutes because the drive is longer. We quote a specific ETA over the phone before we roll.
What's your service area?
All 47 cities in San Diego County. Coastal (Encinitas, Carlsbad, La Jolla, Coronado). Inland (San Marcos, Escondido, Poway). East County (El Cajon, Alpine, Julian). South Bay (Chula Vista, National City). Mountain (Pine Valley, Mount Laguna, Borrego Springs). Outside the county, we refer to partner services.
Do you answer the phone at 3 a.m.?
Yes. Dispatch is 24/7, 365 days a year. A real dispatcher answers — not an IVR, not an answering service. If the nearest rescue truck is further than expected, you'll know within the first minute of the call.
Can you rescue on a freeway shoulder?
Yes, with caveats. We deploy cones and a reflective vest, park the rescue truck as a shield, and work from the passenger side whenever possible. If the shoulder isn't safe (narrow, blind curve, construction zone), we coordinate with CHP to relocate you before charging.
How the charging works
How does a rescue truck actually charge my EV?
Our rescue truck carries a 240V / 9.6 kW Level 2 outlet mounted inside the bed. We run a 50-foot NACS cable from that outlet directly to your Tesla's charge port — the same cable shape you use at home. Power rate matches your home wall connector: roughly 30 miles of range per hour of connection.
Does this work for non-Tesla EVs?
Yes. We carry a CCS adapter that connects to the NACS cable. That means we can charge Rivian, Ford F-150 Lightning, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia EV6/EV9, Polestar 2/3, Chevy Bolt, and most other EVs sold in North America. Same charge speed.
Is this a DC fast charger?
No. Mobile DC fast chargers exist (200+ kW from a diesel trailer) but they cost $150k+ per unit and are overkill for most rescues. We run Level 2 AC charging — slower per hour, but more than enough to add the 10 to 20 miles of range you need to reach the next Supercharger or home.
How much range do I get from a rescue?
Standard rescue adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes. That's enough to reach the nearest Supercharger, CCS DC fast charger, or your home. We don't fully recharge in the field because that would pin the truck out of rotation for hours.
Pricing
What does a rescue cost?
Dispatch is $149 and includes the roll plus the first 15 minutes of charge. After that, $1.80 per added mile of range. Most rescues run $149 to $225 total. After-hours (11pm–6am) adds a $50 surcharge. Price is quoted over the phone before we move.
Do you charge extra for east county or mountain areas?
No mileage upcharge — dispatch is the same $149 across the whole county. The trade-off for distant zones is time: expect 75 to 90 minute arrival vs 25 to 60 for urban SD.
Is this covered by AAA or insurance?
Sometimes. We're not directly contracted with AAA, but many AAA memberships reimburse third-party roadside at a capped rate. Same with many auto-insurance roadside add-ons. We provide a clean receipt you can submit. Check your policy before you call.
Do you take cards at the scene?
Yes. All major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay. We run the authorization when we arrive and settle the final amount after charging is complete. No cash, no checks.
Tesla-specific questions
My Tesla screen is completely black. Is the main battery dead?
Probably not the main battery — that's the 12V accessory battery. Every Tesla has a small 12V that runs the computer and screen. When it dies, everything goes dark, doors don't unlock, the charge port won't open. We jump the 12V on-site (using the tow-eye access on Model 3/Y or the correct access for S/X), then charge the main battery.
What's the difference between you and Tesla Roadside Assistance?
Tesla Roadside typically dispatches a flatbed tow to the nearest Supercharger. Wait can be 1 to 3 hours. We charge your car on-site in 15 to 30 minutes. You stay with the vehicle the entire time. Some scenarios (mechanical failure, collision) still need a tow — we'll tell you when that's the case and coordinate the dispatch.
My charge port won't open. What now?
Usually a 12V drain. On Tesla Model 3 and Model Y there's a manual charge port release cable inside the trunk (passenger side, below the trim). On Model S and Model X the release is behind a panel on the taillight side. We know the access for each year and carry the tools.
Will running my Tesla to 0% damage the battery?
Generally no. Modern Tesla packs have a safety buffer below the displayed 0%. Occasionally hitting zero won't kill the battery, but making a habit of it will shorten its life. After we charge you, the car should behave normally.
Scheduled / non-emergency service
Can I book a mobile charge in advance?
Yes. Scheduled charges are cheaper than emergency dispatch because we batch them during off-peak hours. Popular for Airbnb hosts, wedding venues, film production, small EV fleets without Level 2 yet, and anyone whose home charger is down for a few days.
Do you serve fleets?
Yes. Small fleets of 3 to 20 EVs without installed Level 2 charging can book recurring weekly or nightly mobile charging. We quote by monthly contract. Common in Otay Mesa logistics, North County service businesses, and pool/hospitality contractors who've gone electric.
Can I hire you for an event or film shoot?
Yes. We've supported wedding venues, production vehicles, and one-off shoots needing EV top-up. Book 24 to 48 hours out for best rates. Same-day event charging possible depending on dispatcher load.
