Charge Pro vs. AAA EV roadside, two different services, two different answers
AAA added EV roadside to the Plus plan in 2023. It's a real service that works. Charge Pro is a San Diego County-specific alternative that connects you with a local operator who charges the car where it sits. Both have their place, here's when each makes sense.
The short version
AAA is included in membership and delivers you via flatbed to a DC fast charger. Charge Pro is out-of-pocket and connects you with an operator who charges the car in place instead of towing it. If leaving the car behind is the problem, an on-scene charge solves it. For routine non-urgent stranded events where you have time, AAA's cost advantage is hard to beat.

FAQ
Can I have both?
Yes, and many EV owners do. AAA Plus as a baseline roadside plan + Charge Pro on call for urgent SD County situations. The combo covers every scenario: AAA for non-urgent + out-of-area, Charge Pro for urgent + SD metro. The operator sets the per-call price and quotes it before they start, so you can weigh it against the AAA membership you already pay for.
Does AAA flatbed damage EV underbodies?
Rarely, but it happens. Tesla battery packs, Rivian skid plates, and Cybertruck underbodies are sensitive to improper loading angles. Good flatbed operators know this. Generalist operators contracted by AAA may not. If you have an expensive EV and AAA dispatches a flatbed, ask the driver specifically if they've loaded your model before. If not, ask for a different operator, it's your right.
What if I'm an AAA member and also need Charge Pro?
Call Charge Pro if you'd rather not leave the car, pay out of pocket, get an invoice. Then file the invoice with AAA for potential reimbursement (AAA does reimburse non-contracted roadside sometimes, no guarantee). Or, call AAA first and accept the flatbed tow. Your call based on urgency.
Does Tesla roadside include anything EV-specific?
Tesla roadside (part of new-car warranty + available on used Teslas for a fee) provides flatbed tow, similar to AAA but Tesla-contracted. Service quality is usually good but response times vary by market. The difference is what arrives: Tesla sends a flatbed, an on-scene charge leaves the car with you.
What about the free chargers AAA installed in California?
AAA has deployed mobile L2 charging trucks in some California markets (LA, Bay Area primarily), with limited SD County coverage as of 2026. When available, similar service to Charge Pro but AAA-member-only. Worth asking when you call AAA whether a mobile charger is available vs a flatbed tow.
